After over two decades since it last hit the small screen, Twin Peaks will soon return on the air, so it’s as good time as ever to talk about David Lynch. While Lynch hasn’t done a new picture since 2006’s INLAND EMPIRE, he has definitely made a strong mark on modern day film. Combining Buñuel’s surrealist tone with Wilder’s Hollywood tone, Lynch has crafted movies as thrilling, tense, and frightening as Eraserhead and Blue Velvet. So today, I thought I would ask what is your favorite David Lynch film?
I would say Mulholland Drive would be my choice (it’s among the best movies of the 21st century in my opinion). Mulholland Drive is like a nightmarish version of Sunset Boulevard, a twisted mystery that in it’s last thirty minutes completely flips the story around. Originally shot for television, it’s amazing how complex and complete Mulholland Drive is in its two and a half hour duration. Blue Velvet, Lynch’s break-out picture and satirical look at a Reagan-ish America, would be next, followed by Eraserhead.
But what about you?
I was tempted to say Mulholland Dr. but in all honesty Blue Velvet remains one of my all-time favourite movies … haunting, sexy and with that dreamy music…genius. I have a soft spot for the often underrated Lost Highway too.

Can’t go wrong with either. Lost Highway is extremely underrated… an neglected masterpiece.

I agree with Craig, I was torn between Mulholland Dr. and Blue Velvet, but I still prefer the latter.

I prefer Mulholland Dr., but both are great movies.

It’s a toss-up between Mulholland Dr. and Eraserhead (just picked up the Criterion version the other day and it’s beautiful).

Haven’t seen the Criterion blu of Eraserhead, though I did watch the version available on Hulu. I’ll have to pick the new release up.

I like The Elephant Man, but I much prefer David Lynch’s more David Lynch-y movies.

Mulholland Drive is my favourite film full stop, so not an especially difficult decision 🙂

That’s an excellent film for sure. I just love every second of the movie, it’s a film I can never tire of.

Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive and Lost Highway (especially the Rammstein moment) – but not necessarily in that order.

All great picks. It’s good to see Lost Highway get a shout-out, a very underrated picture. That Rammstein scene is really something.

Mulholland Drive and Blue Velvet are very hard to split. However, I would have to go for Mulholland Drive, purely due to the outstanding performance from Naomi Watts.

Naomi Watts’ performance is amazing. I’m bewildered the Oscars completely snubbed her.

Mulholland Drive mate.

An excellent movie for sure. I’m surprised it’s the overwhelming favorite listed here, it would be my pick too, but it’s not a very accessible picture.

A confusing and bewildering film for sure……but bring it on! I don’t even try to work it out any more. And Naomi Watts is just breathtaking! She’s like 5 different people all rolled up into one. Really the most underrated performance ever.

I still need to see a few of his films (i.e. The Elephant Man and Wild at Heart), but my favorite is Mulholland Drive. I finally got to that as part of my project a couple years ago, and it blew me away. Really want to revisit it sometime soon.

Mulholland Drive blew me away when I first saw it too. I enjoyed it even more a second time around, really improves on a second viewing.

I have never been a huge fan of his but I really like The Elephant Man and Mulholland Drive. Very good films.

I like The Elephant Man, but to be truthful, I enjoy Lynch’s more surreal movies. Mulholland Drive is a masterpiece in my eyes.

It really is brilliant. It’s one of those that I’ve recently been hungry to watch again.

Hmmm, I haven’t seen enough of his work to have a favorite. In fact, I should give Mullholand Drive a watch at some point.

Which ones have you seen? I’d probably recommend checking out Twin Peaks or Blue Velvet first, those are probably Lynch’s easiest films to start out on. Mulholland Drive is a must-see, I can’t emphasize enough how much I love that movie.

Mullholland Drive is a stunning work of art. So I would say that is my choice.

Although I did just watch Blue Velvet again the other day. I feel like it switches back and forth between the two depending which one I have watched most recently.
