What is Your Favorite Matthew McConaughey Role?

True Detective‘s season finale is tonight and I’m pretty excited.  Creator Nic Pizzolatto has assured that the season will end on a concluding note and not be open-ended like The Killing‘s widely reviled first season finale (which Pizzolatto also wrote).  And True Detective‘s greatest strength is Matthew McConaughey’s role as Detective Rust Cohle. It’s just one of the string of great performances by McConaughey.  So it’s an appropriate time to ask what’s your favorite role by the actor?

My favorite would be his breakout role as David Wooderson in Dazed and Confused. McConaughey’s only in the movie for a short time but he has many of the movie’s best scenes and lines (“That’s what I love about these high school girls, man. I get older, they stay the same age”).  But what about you?

  1. loved him in the 1st movie I saw with him, Time to Kill. Ok I did see dazed and confused first but didn’t know it was him so have to rewatch it again.

    • Haven’t seen Time to Kill, I really ought to check it out.

  2. I can’t wait to get started on True Detective. I’m really looking forward to it.

As for his best role? There are now so many to choose from but I’d have to agree with you on Wooderson from Dazed & Confused. He absolutely superb in that and, as it goes, I’m currently writing a review on the film.

    • True Detective is phenomenal. It’s like if The Wire met Twin Peaks.

Wooderson is such a great character. He’s only in Dazed and Confused for about ten minutes but he has the movie’s strongest parts. Can’t wait to see your review, it’s one of my favorite movies.

      • The Wire meets Twin Peaks sounds good to me. I might just start the first episode tonight.

Yeah, Dazed & Confused is such a cult classic. I love it myself! Been meaning to do a review for a while and after seeing it again recently, it gave me the perfect opportunity.

  3. Agree on his Dazed and Confused character… also his breakout role in A Time To Kill.

    • Dazed and Confused is a movie I watch every summer, great film.

  4. I’ve not seen Dazed and confused but right now it would have to be Mud, it’s just the mystery and sympathy he adds to the character.

    • Definitely check out Dazed and Confused, it’s one of my favorite comedies. Mud is an excellent choice, he really does add a lot to the character.

  5. So far, Killer Joe. Although, I have yet to see Dallas Buyers Club.

    • I haven’t seen Killer Joe, but have heard plenty of good things of McConaughey’s performance.

      • Yes, he’s really menacing in it. Not a comfortable watch, but a highly recommended one.

  6. Haven’t seen many yet actually… would have to be Mud though from the few I have.

    • Mud’s definitely one of McConaughey’s best roles. He’s done some great work as of late.

  7. I haven’t seen True Detective yet. (Will fix that when it hits DVD.)

My favorite of his roles? Dallas Buyer’s Club and, probably, Bernie.

    • True Detective is a great show and while it has some flaws is the most engrossing series since Breaking Bad’s conclusion. I haven’t seen DBC yet but McConaughey was excellent in Bernie.

  8. Killer Joe at the extreme and Time to Kill near.

    • Haven’t seen either unfortunately. Looks like I’ll have to make time for both.

  9. A Time to Kill and Amistad.

    • I think I might have seen Amistad a long time ago, but I actually don’t really remember any of it. I’ll have to see it again.

      • Matthew did a solid acting job. The ensemble was well done; for me the best acting job went to Anthony Hopkins. The end court scene is one of the more memorable I can think of. Really moving.

  10. I don’t know if it’s my favorite, but no one’s mentioned it yet so I will: The Wolf of Wall Street. Again, only a limited time on screen but he adds so much to the film. Gotta love the chest pounding song: great stuff.
Won’t be seeing it tonight, but really excited for True Detective’s last episode. Hope to catch it tomorrow or the next day!

    • McConaughey has the best scene in The Wolf of Wall Street, such a hilarious moment. I won’t ruin anything but the True Detective finale was really good and I didn’t quite expect the ending.

  11. I actually think I might have to go with Mud here. Incredible performance in a pretty spectacular movie at that.

    • Nice to see Mud get some attention. Can’t believe that was completely ignored by the Oscars.

  12. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. KIDDING!!

Probably Dallas Buyers Club. Heartbreaking performance.

    • Another mention for DBC. I need to see that.

  13. What’s my favorite role of his? Not True Detective

  14. I’d say my favourite role of his is probably Killer Joe. That was the first film of his I saw that where he really blew me away.

    • Haven’t seen Killer Joe yet (one I need to see), but have heard plenty of great stuff about his performance.

  15. I haven’t seen Dallas Buyer’s Club yet but I like him in The Lincoln Lawyer. I actually liked him in his early rom-com The Wedding Planner, ahah, but I skipped his other rom-coms in his later years.

    • I haven’t seen DBC yet, but I have heard good things. I thought The Lincoln Lawyer was okay, but McConaughey was great in that picture.

  16. Another vote for Killer Joe. I’ve yet to see Dallas Buyers Club either. There’s also one of his earlier films, Lone Star, which I’ve yet to see. He’s supposed to be good in that too.

    • I need to watch Killer Joe, I think it’s on Netflix currently. I haven’t seen Lone Star either but I heard it was pretty good.

  17. He was amazing in Dallas Buyers Club and also really liked him in Lincoln Lawyer
