R. I. P. Philip Seymour Hoffman

Tragic news: Philip Seymour Hoffman died earlier this morning, found in his New York apartment with a hypodermic needle in his arm.  I’ve long been a fan of Hoffman, who has exhibited a career of brilliance, from his multiple collaborations with Paul Thomas Anderson (MagnoliaBoogie Nights) to his Oscar winning performance in Capote.  He was one of the best and boldest actors working today, with a variety of films under his belt that show how impressive his resume is.

Hoffman had the ability to vitalize any character he played with a strong personality, such as the menacing yet inviting Lancaster Dodd of The Master (see the clip above to watch part of his amazing performance).  A talent like Hoffman rarely comes by and he will surely be missed.

  1. R.I.P. Philip Seymour Hoffman. What a loss of an unbelievable talent. I immediately thought of The Master but he’s been so good in so many movies capable of any range. He’s the kind of actor you’d suffer through a lousy movie for just to see his performance. Wow he will be missed.

    • He always delivers such great performances and even is the redeeming factor of any bad movie you saw him in (i. e. Patch Adams). Hoffman was a great actor and he will be missed indeed.

  2. This is terrible news. Hoffman has always been one of my favorite actors. I last saw him in The Hunger Games and I loved him there. His scenes with Southerland were fantastic and added so much to the film. Going to miss him in any future PTA films and who knows how many others he could have been in.

    • I’ve always been a huge fan of Hoffman. He’s such a fantastic actor and always delivers. He will be missed.

  3. So sorry. What a loss. Great post. Hard to understand how such a talented person had these struggles.

    • I know he’s had some drug problems before but this was a complete shock. Hoffman’s one of the best actors working today and he will be missed.

  4. Terrible news. What a huge loss. Such a talented actor.

    • He was one of my favorites and I’ve never seen an even mediocre performance by him, even in the films he was in that I didn’t like. Hoffman will be missed.

  5. Shocking news, unbelievable. Such a loss of an amazing actor.

    • He was a really amazing actor who always delivered. He will be missed.

  6. RIP indeed. What a loss he will be.

    • He certainly was one of the greats and it’s sad to see him die so soon. Hoffman will be missed.

  7. An absolute shame. He was my favourite actor.
Excellent post, may he rest in piece.

    • Thanks! He was one of my favorites as well and had a career of brilliance.

  8. He was one of the more talented, original actors working today. I find it hard to wrap my head around the fact he’s gone. DAMN!

    • Hoffman’s a kind of actor who doesn’t come around often. I can’t believe he’s gone as well, he’s one of my favorites.

  9. Such sad news! Phillip Seymour-Hoffman – an undeniable talent!

    • Hoffman always delivered in any movie he starred in and it’s a tragic loss. May he rest in peace.

  10. Truly a great and shocking loss. Haven’t been hit so hard by an actor’s death for some time now. Phillip Seymour Hoffman truly was a man who elevated every movie he was in, and will surely be missed.

    • I’ve never seen a Hoffman performance I didn’t like. The man was an amazing actor and he will be missed.

  11. A tragic loss indeed. He had amazing talent.

    • He was such a great actor and this came as a complete shock. He will be missed.

  12. Such a shame his presence and ability will be missed.

    • He was a tremendous actor who always put effort into his work. He will be missed.

  13. Your last sentence is very spot on… he is an extraordinary actor who has the talent AND dedication. He elevates everything he is in, I miss him already 😦

    • It’s sad knowing that he’s gone, an undeniable talent.

  14. It’s still so devastating that he’s gone. For my money, he was the best working actor in the business. RIP.

    • I would say he was the best actor working today as well. Hoffman was great in just about everything he starred in.
