What’s The Next Great TV Drama?

Today is a sad day: Breaking Bad airs its final episode tonight.  I read that Vince Gilligan and co. went through over forty possible endings before writing the last script and I have great faith in the show to deliver.  In years from now, I predict Breaking Bad would be considered one of the greatest and most revolutionary shows of all time (even though it’s already deemed as a classic now).

So this inspired this week’s question: what’s the next great TV drama now that there’s no more Breaking Bad?  I’ve been talking this over with a friend and I’m not sure if there’s one to immediately pick up the reigns.  Mad Men would be my first alternative, but it only has two years until its own conclusion, and while it has maintained its great quality, it’s hard to deny the most recent season felt a bit lackluster.  And while there are plenty of other great dramas on TV, I’m not sure anything can take Breaking Bad‘s place.  But who knows?  Back in 2007 and 2008, when The Sopranos and The Wire concluded their runs, people had the same discussion.

But what do you think?

  1. Ive still never seen this Breaking Bad. Dont think it even airs over here, but everyone seems to be raving about its final season. One day Ill pick it up cheap on dvd.

As for the future? Well, The Walking Dead springs to mind. Then there is the new boys like True Detective & Mob City are my most anticipated.

    • You’ve got to check it out! I know you’re a big fan of The Sopranos, and Breaking Bad has a similar tone through mixing violence with humor.

The Walking Dead is a very good show. I haven’t watched it regularly but I’ve really liked what I’ve seen. Thanks for the comment.

  2. Game of Thrones is a contender, but maybe the fantasy theme dissuades people from including it into the conversation. But honestly, its my only drama I watch now with BB gone.

    • Thanks for the comment. I really like Game of Thrones, definitely one of the better shows on television.
