Who Is Your Favorite Antihero?

Breaking Bad starts its second half of its final season today and in honor of Walter White, I’d thought it’d be appropriate to ask who is your favorite antihero (be they in movies or television).

Let me define what an antihero is for those who don’t know.  An antihero is an antagonist who plays the central role in the movie/TV show they star in.  This is different from a villain, who fights along with a protagonist who takes the starring role.  For example, Michael Corleone of The Godfather is an antihero but Anton Chigurh of No Country For Old Men is a villain.

So who is your pick?

  1. Han Solo.

    • Nice pick. Han Solo’s a great choice.

  2. I’ve got to go with Michael Corleone on this one.

    • Great pick, that’d probably mine too with the other contender being Travis Bickle.

  3. Dexter.

    • Nice pick. Love Dexter.

  4. Travis Bickle from Taxi Driver.

    • Travis Bickle’s a great choice, he’d be mine as well.

  5. My favorite is Ralph Fiennes. From ‘Schindler’s List’ to ‘The Red Dragon’ to ‘Harry Potter’ to ‘The Duchess’ to ‘Clash of the Titans’ he makes my skin crawl while I secretly find him attractive. A Devil!

  6. Dredd.

    • Nice pick! Love Dredd.

  7. V from ‘V for Vendetta’ is a cool one. I think Wolverine would also fall into this category, no? No particular claim to morals or virtues but can be counted on to do what’s right. WIlling to kill the bad guy. Usually out for their own interests but willing to sacrifice themselves for others on limited occasions, etc.

    • Nice picks!

  8. Jack Carter, from the Michael Caine version of Get Carter. One of Caine’s best characters. Totally despicable, and yet you root for him all the way.

    • Nice pick. Caine always delivers.

  9. I’ll go with an over-the-top character: Tony Montana.

    • Glad to see Tony get a shout-out. He’s a great character.

  10. So many great ones through the years. Certainly, I’d go with the one identified by Monkeyboy today, Jack Carter from Get Carter (1971), but these as well:
    – Youngblood Priest, Superfly (1972)
    – Eddie Coyle, The Friends of Eddie Coyle (1973)
    – Dirty Harry (1971)
    – William Munny, Unforgiven (1992)
    – Walker, Point Blank (1967)
    – Jules Winnfield, Pulp Fiction (1994)
    – Travis Bickle, Taxi Driver (1976)
    – Neil McCauley, Heat (1995)

And, of course, Michael Corleone from The Godfather.

    • Great selection of picks. Can’t disagree with any of them.

  11. Jim Stark (James Dean) in Rebel Without A Cause

    • Nice pick. Saw Rebel Without A Cause a while back and Dean’s performance was really amazing. Sad he had such a short career.

  12. Deadpool (not stupid X-Men Origins: Wolverine version). He’ll maybe have his own movie one day.

    • Nice pick!
