What Is Your Favorite Spike Lee Movie?

On Friday, I saw Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing, which was as powerful as when I first saw it.  Speaking of which, Spike Lee started up a campaign on Kickstarter earlier this week, which provided the inspiration for today’s question: what’s your favorite Spike Lee movie?  Mine is Do The Right Thing, which is one of my personal favorite movies.

  1. I would agree with you on Do the Right Thing. Reading this post makes me want to see it again.

    • Yeah, it’s a great movie for sure. I especially love the ambiguous ending.

  2. Do The Right Things is his best by far for me.

    • Glad you agree. It’s an amazing movie.

    • I agree as well. Hard not to go with that one.

      • Yeah, it’s a great film. So unforgettable.

  3. I gotta admit, I’m just not a big fan of his. That’s one reason I’m a bit tepid about “Oldboy”

    • I’m not a giant fan of him as well though I love his old movies. I’m worried about his Oldboy remake, I’m unsure that will work. Thanks for commenting.

  4. Do the right thing is probably his best movie but I personally enjoy Malcolm X and The Inside Man more.

    • Thanks for the comment. Both great choices.

  5. I’m with Issy on this filmmaker. I’ve watched Malcolm X and The Inside Man more than any of Spike Lee’s other films.

    • Thanks for the comment. I love Malcolm X as well, though I prefer Do The Right Thing and 25th Hour a bit more.

  6. He’s never topped Do the Right Thing and I doubt he ever will.

    • Thanks for the comment. I agree, he will never top Do The Right Thing. Such an amazing movie.

  7. I’m with you. Do the Right Thing is easily on my personal all time top 10.

    • Yeah, Do The Right Thing is one of my all-time favorites as well. I can’t believe it wasn’t nominated for Best Picture that year.

  8. Do the Right Thing may be his most important film, but I always had a general preference for his debut, She’s Gotta Have It. One of the most underrated debut films from any director.

    • Nice pick! I haven’t seen She’s Gotta Have It, but I’ll be sure to check it out.

  9. I think his documentary, “When the Levees Broke,” is Spike Lee’s best work, but Do the Right Thing is the one I go back to most.

    • Nice picks! Do The Right Thing is an absolute classic. I haven’t seen When the Levees Broke, but I have that on my Netflix que.

  10. I’m not familiar w Spike Lee, as I’ve only seen Inside Man so far.

    • Thanks for commenting. I recommend checking out Do The Right Thing and 25th Hour.

  11. I would have to go with Do The Right Thing as well. The soundtrack alone with Public Enemy is so memorable.

    • Do The Right Thing’s soundtrack is pretty awesome.

  12. I have only seen two, unfortunately, but based on those it would easily be Do the Right Thing. Probably the best film I have watched for my current project as well.

    • Nice pick! Do The Right Thing’s a great movie for sure.

  13. Just re-watched Do the Right Thing on HBO Go the other week and it is still my favorite Spike Lee Joint.

    • “Fight the Power!”

Yeah, it’s easily my favorite. The way how he balances the narratives of all those characters really amazes me.

      • I actually saw that at the theater when it first came out. woo hoo suburban white kid into Public Enemy, surely their target audience 😉

  14. Also love calling out to anyone I see carrying a radio “What up Radio Raheem!”

  15. “Do the Right Thing” as well.
