Anchorman: A Reconsideration

Original Thoughts: You can check out my review by clicking here, but I’ll reiterate my thoughts.  I’m typically someone who likes Will Ferrell.  I liked his Saturday Night Live work and enjoyed Talledega Nights. However, I found Anchorman to be trying and unfunny.  While Ferrell devotes himself to his material, a majority of the gags last far too long.

Why I Decided To Watch It Again: If you’ve ever been on the Internet (and seeing that you’re reading my blog which means you do), you’re probably aware of the massive cult following Anchorman has.  Many of my fellow bloggers love the movie, so much that I really wanted to enjoy it as much as them.

My Reevaluation: Did I like Anchorman more a second time?  No, I liked it even less.  I’ll admit, a few jokes worked (Jack Black’s cameo worked in particular) and Steve Carrell’s Brick had some very funny lines, but I found that Ferrell and the rest of the actors were just doing improv during the entire film.  While that’s not a bad thing (Curb Your Enthusiasm does that for every episode) it didn’t work here.  Anchorman fans, please don’t hate me for saying this.

Out of Four Stars

Original: **1/2

New: **

  1. Well at least you gave it another shot.

    • Thanks! I typically like Ferrell, but couldn’t get into this one.

  2. I couldn’t agree with you more.

    • Glad I’m not the only one under-welmed by the movie.

  3. Everyone’s entitled to their opinion I guess! 🙂

  4. I too like this movie. One of Will Ferrell’s best.

    • Thanks for the comment. Glad you enjoyed it.

  5. Like you, I’m not a fan. As a matter of fact this was the last movie I walked out of.

    • Thanks for the comment! Glad I’m not alone about my feelings of Anchorman.

  6. Never liked this either the first time I saw it. This confirms that I don’t need to rewatch this. Think you made a typo btw: “the rest of the actors were improving the entire film” 😉

    • Thanks for catching the typo. I know plenty of people who like it, but I just didn’t find it funny.

      • You and me both

  7. It is always interesting doing re-reviews and seeing how opinions change. I will be watching this one again soon in prep for the sequel and wonder if the same thing will happen for me.

    Nice recap

    • Thanks! Yeah, I thought it would be interesting to see if I could change my mind on Anchorman, but unfortunately it didn’t happen.

  8. I’m not a big fan of Ferrell, and I didn’t love Anchorman either.

    • Thanks for the comment. Glad I’m not alone in disliking Anchorman.
