Francis Ford Coppola to Make Another Mafia Movie

The famed “Godfather” plans to return to the genre that made him famous

After twenty-three years since The Godfather Part III came out, legendary director Francis Ford Coppola has decided to return to the mob genre and has started writing a script about an Italian-American family in the 1930s to 60s.

After hearing this news I was very unsure what to think about.  I think Coppola is one of the greatest directors of all time.  He helmed four of the best movies of the 70s, The Godfather, The Conversation, The Godfather Part II, and my personal favorite film Apocalypse Now.  However, the director has lost his way after the decade and his later films lack the brilliance he showed in his earlier work, mostly dabbling in different genres.  Some of his new movies remain interesting (despite its many faults, Bram Stroker’s Dracula is an intriguing, if dull, picture) but most were misses (Jack for example).  Recently Coppola has stuck to making small indies such as Twixt with limited success.

On one hand, this is something I’ve been waiting Coppola to do.  His best films are great because of their ambition and meaning behind them.  The dedication Coppola put into his work (most notoriously in Apocalypse Now) gave way to a new era of filmmaking that marked a new golden age of filmmaking that eventually declined to the growing consumerism of the 80s.  With this new project, Coppola could make his strongest film in about thirty years.

However, I do have issues and that comes from Coppola himself.  While I enjoy it more than others, The Godfather Part III is nowhere near the level of greatness its predecessors achieved.  While I think the director has the potential to make another great movie, I’m unsure he can do so.

Still, the idea is enough to get anyone excited about.  But what do you think?

  1. I have the same fears you do. He’s well past his prime and this could end up cheapening a once great director’s name still further.

    • Yeah, I agree. It’s something I want him to do, but I’m unsure whether he can bring another great story to the screen.

  2. Hmmm……fingers crossed it gives us another gem from that era, I do love the old mafia style films 🙂

    • I love me some mafia movies as well and Coppola’s rank with Scorsese’s as the best. Hopefully he’ll make another mob classic.

  3. Well this is concerning. I hope he’s going back to the mafia idea because he feels the need to tell another story, not because he thinks it will make him famous and relevant again. Still, I hope it works out because we know this guy can make good movies. Hopefully he still can.

    • Yeah, that’s what I’m worried about. I don’t think he’s making a mob movie because he has another great story but just to regain his popularity. I hope to be proven wrong though.

  4. It seems like the movie will be compared to The Godfather so much…. Coppola’s made some brilliant films no doubt, but I’m not so sure. We’ll have to wait and see though.

    • Yeah, that’s another problem right there. Coppola’s classics set a standard too high. I would love to see him make another classic, but am unsure he can do so.
