Sight and Sound’s 10 Best Films of 2012

The Master tops the magazine's list this yeat

The Master tops the magazine’s list this year

Sound and Sight Magazine’s polls are generally the most respected among film communities since they are picked by top-notch critics.  Every year they release a list for the ten best films picked by its voters.  Here is the list below with the names of the movies and their directors.

1. The Master (Paul Thomas Anderson)

2. Tabu (Miguel Gomes)

3. Amour (Michael Haneke)

4. Holy Motors (Leos Carax)

5. Beasts of the Southern Wild (Benh Zeitlin)

6. Berberian Sound Studio (Peter Strickland)

7. Moonrise Kingdom (Wes Anderson)

8. Beyond the Hills (Christian Mungiu)

9. Once Upon a Time in Anatolia (Nuri Bilge Ceylan)

10. This is Not A Film (Jafar Pahani and Mojtaba Mirtahmaseb)

Now I’ve actually only seen four on the list: The MasterAmourBeasts of the Southern Wild, and Moonrise Kingdom and they’s all make my current top 10 list so far this year.  Some of these films I’ve never heard of until now.

So what are your thoughts on the list?  Do you agree or disagree with the films mentioned?

  1. Like you I haven’t watched most of these films, but I would not have “The Master” as #1.

    • The Master is a very polarizing film. I’m one of the movie’s supporters but I completely understand the opposing opinion. Thanks for commenting.

  2. I’ve seen 3 of these films. Beasts of the Southern Wild and Moonrise Kingdom definitely belong so I’ll reserve judgment on the rest of the list. However putting The Master at #1 makes me want to dismiss everything that comes after it.

    • Both Beasts and Moonrise would make my list. You know I’m a fan of The Master but I completely understand the criticism behind it. Thanks for commenting.

  3. I haven’t seen many on your list but I’m waiting until the end of the month before deciding on my top 10. Moonrise Kingdom might make my list, not sure yet though.

    • I want to see a couple of films before I make my own list like Django Unchained and Zero Dark Thirty. I think Moonrise Kingdom is my number 5 for this year so far. Thanks for commenting.

  4. Out of all those movies I’ve only seen three. Still waiting for The Master to come out over here, which will be next year.

    • I highly recommend it and look forward to reading your review. Thanks for commenting.

  5. Is it bad I haven’t seen any of them? TED is my #1 🙂

    • I’ve been able to see four of them, but it’s really been hard to find theaters playing these movies.

I haven’t seen Ted but I’m planning to rent that on DVD. Thanks for commenting.
