Is There Any Actor You Disliked Initially But Later Changed Your Mind About?

My post on Friday about underrated and overrated actors has stirred up much agreement and disagreement.  After reading a few comments, I got the idea for today’s question: is there an actor you originally disliked but then changed your opinion about?

The first actor which comes to mind is George Clooney.  I thought he was always kind of smug in his roles and wasn’t a fan of either ER or Batman and Robin.  After seeing his work with the Coen brothers and more recently in The Descendants, however, I now think he’s a great actor and one of the best currently working today.

The other actor I can think of is Ryan Gosling.  I don’t think I saw a movie with him before last year but I didn’t really like his image.  Once I saw Drive though, I was stunned by his performance and now I’m eagerly awaiting his next movie.

But what about you?

  1. Great Post, I agree with you on Gosling. I wasn’t sure at first, but once I saw his performances I changed my mind.

    • Thanks! Yeah, before I saw Drive I didn’t think he looked like a particularly good actor. He blew me away in his performance.

  2. Brad Pitt comes to mind first. Initially dismissed him as a pretty face, but he has done a great job picking interesting roles.

Alec Baldwin is another actor who has done an 180 for me, twice. Early in his carrier I liked him in “Beetlejuice” and “Miami Blues”. But somewhere around “The Shadow” I found him to be smug and a turn-off. Then all of a sudden he started hitting a great streak of roles that require his great comedic actor skills–“30 Rock”, “The Departed”–and I love him again.

    • Oh, good point about Brad Pitt. I used to dislike him as well but after seeing his work with David Fincher and more recently in Moneyball and The Tree of Life changed my mind about him.

I’d agree with Alec Baldwin as well. I found him to be smug as well but changed my mind when I saw him on 30 Rock and The Departed. Thanks for commenting.

  3. I never enjoyed Jim Carrey until I saw his dramas. Then I saw some potential in him.

Another is Channing Tatum. He’s been a “pretty boy” for YEARS, and I was about to give up on him when The Vow came out. But he delivered in both 21 Jump Street and Haywire.

    • I grew up watching a lot of Jim Carrey’s comedies so I haven’t really had a problem with him but I do prefer him in dramas.

I’ve never liked Channing Tatum, but I guess I should give him a chance. I haven’t seen 21 Jump Street out of my dislike for Jonah Hill or Haywire so I should watch them both. Thanks for commenting.

  4. I would recommend ‘Michael Clayton’ and ‘Up in the Air’. I liked Clooney after watching these movies. He was great in ‘Syriana’ and ‘The American’ as well.

    • I’ve seen all of those except Syriana and thought Clooney was great in them. Thanks for commenting.

  5. I think Matthew McConnaughey is one of those. I wouldn’t say he’s my favourite actor but I certainly don’t dislike him as much as I did.

    • I don’t think I’ve seen McConnaughey in many films but I’ve never disliked him. Thanks for commenting.

  6. Good question mate. For me, seeing Clooney in From Dusk Till Dawn made him a man to watch, he was excellent in that.

    • Thanks! Clooney was great in that.

  7. Definitely Brad Pitt. The reverse for Eddie Murphy–liked him, especially on SNL, but then disliked him with the stupid Nutty Professor and everything since.

    • Agree with Brad Pitt. Yeah, I can totally see the reverse for Eddie Murphy. He’s really ruined his career in the past ten years. Thanks for commenting.

  8. I used to dislike Anne Hathaway – not hugely, I found her charming in simple roles but I didn’t think she will be able to pull off Catwoman. Oh wow, she just blew me away with that role. Same goes for McConaughey – it’s so impressive how he turned his career around.

    • Yeah, I have the same feeling with Hathaway. I haven’t seen McConaughey in many roles but the ones I have I enjoyed him in. Thanks for commenting.

  9. Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Hated him. Hated, hated, hated him. Since Looper, I’ve changed my mind. Still that rated that high in my list, though.

    • I initially had disliked him too but once I saw him in The Dark Knight Rises and Lincoln I changed my mind. I still need to see Looper though. Thanks for commenting.

  10. […] week’s question was inspired by my last question, which was if there was an actor you had originally disliked but changed your opinion about later. […]
