Emmy Predictions 2012

I predict the winners for TV’s award show

Hey everyone!

Since the Emmys are this Sunday, I’d like to post my predictions.  I’ll be using what I call a Dream-Settle-Expect where I choose who I’d want, who would be my second choice, and who I think will win.  Now let’s go.

DRAMA

BEST DRAMA SERIES

“Boardwalk Empire”
“Breaking Bad”
“Downton Abbey”
“Game of Thrones”
“Homeland”
“Mad Men”

Dream: Breaking Bad Settle and Expect: Mad Men

This would be the best set of nominees in Emmy history if Downton Abbey was replaced by Justified, but never mind.  Breaking Bad is the best thing on TV period.  But Mad Men’s going to win again, which isn’t underserved, but I’d like to see Bad get some love from the Emmys.

BEST DRAMA ACTOR

Hugh Bonneville, “Downton Abbey”
Steve Buscemi, “Boardwalk Empire”
Bryan Cranston, “Breaking Bad”
Michael C. Hall, “Dexter”
Jon Hamm, “Mad Men”
Damian Lewis, “Homeland”

Dream: Bryan Cranston Settle: Jon Hamm Expect: Bryan Cranston

It’s going to be Bryan Cranston, who completely deserves the award even though he’s won before.  Oh and by the way does anyone think the last season of Dexter was award worthy?

BEST DRAMA ACTRESS

Kathy Bates, “Harry’s Law”
Glenn Close, “Damages”
Claire Danes, “Homeland”
Michelle Dockery, “Downton Abbey”
Julianna Margulies, “The Good Wife”
Elisabeth Moss, “Mad Men”

Dream: Clair Danes Settle: Elisabeth Moss Expect: Clair Danes

Homeland was the best new series that debuted this season and Danes will win a deserved Emmy.  Just one question, why is Kathy Bates here?  She’s a good actress, but Harry’s Law is is far from good.

BEST DRAMA SUPPORTING ACTOR

Jim Carter, “Downton Abbey”
Brendan Coyle, “Downton Abbey”
Peter Dinklage, “Game of Thrones”
Giancarlo Esposito, “Breaking Bad”
Jared Harris, “Mad Men”
Aaron Paul, “Breaking Bad”

Dream: Giancarlo Esposito  Settle: Aaron Paul  Expect: Giancarlo Espotio

I had to make the difficult choice between Paul and Espotio and ended up picking the latter.  Espotio made one of the greatest villains in TV history and should get a well deserved award.

BEST DRAMA SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Christine Baranski, “The Good Wife”
Joanne Froggatt, “Downton Abbey”
Anna Gunn, “Breaking Bad”
Christina Hendricks, “Mad Men”
Archie Panjabi, “The Good Wife”
Maggie Smith, “Downton Abbey”

Dream: Christina Hendricks Settle: Anna Gunn Expect: Joanne Froggatt

Hendricks broke bounds on Mad Men, Gun gave a great performance in Breaking Bad, but the Emmys will probably want to reward Downton Abby, so I think Froggatt will win.

COMEDY

BEST COMEDY SERIES

“The Big Bang Theory”
“Curb Your Enthusiasm”
“Girls”
“Modern Family”
“30 Rock”
“Veep”

Dream: Curb Your Enthusiasm Settle: Veep  Expect: Modern Family

Just the fact Louie, Parks and Recreation, and Community aren’t in this category makes me wonder whether the Emmys watch television.  Instead they put in shows nominated for their popularity (Modern Family), shows far past their prime (30 Rock), or shows that were never particularly good at all (The Big Bang Theory).  I’m picking Curb Your Enthusiasm because it always makes me laugh, though I’d be happy to see Veep win too.  But we all know Modern Family’s going to win because it has the highest ratings.  But really, last season was so dull and its far from the best comedy on TV.

BEST COMEDY ACTOR

Alec Baldwin, “30 Rock”
Don Cheadle, “House of Lies”
Louis C.K., “Louie”
Jon Cryer, “Two and a Half Men”
Larry David, “Curb Your Enthusiasm”
Jim Parsons, “The Big Bang Theory”

Dream: Louis C. K.  Settle: Larry David  Expect: Jim Parsons

Really, Jon Cryer is one of the best comic actors on TV?  The winner should be Louis C. K., who made the funniest show on TV what it is.  Larry David is second on my list.  But the Emmys will pick Jim Parsons again.  I think he’s the bright spot on The Big Bang Theory, despite how annoying his character usually is, but does he really deserve another Emmy?

BEST COMEDY ACTRESS

Zooey Deschanel, “New Girl”
Lena Dunham, “Girls”
Edie Falco, “Nurse Jackie”
Tina Fey, “30 Rock”
Melissa McCarthy, “Mike & Molly”
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, “Veep”
Amy Poehler, “Parks and Recreation”

Dream: Amy Poehler  Settle and Expect: Julia Louis-Dreyfus

I’m rolling my eyes that Zooey Deschanel and Melissa McCarthy got nominated for their pair of equally overrated shows.  Amy Poehler deserves to win, but I’m guessing Dreyfus will, which is fine.  Just please don’t pick McCarthy again.

BEST COMEDY SUPPORTING ACTOR

Ty Burrell, “Modern Family”
Jesse Tyler Ferguson, “Modern Family”
Max Greenfield, “New Girl”
Bill Hader, “Saturday Night Live”
Ed O’Neill, “Modern Family”
Eric Stonestreet, “Modern Family”

Nothing

I really can’t stand the fact that they overloaded on Modern Family while ignoring everything else.  Does anyone believe Greenfield’s better than Nick Offerman on Parks and Rec or Danny Pudi of Community?  I’m guessing Ed O’Neill will win, which is probably the best of the not-so-great slate.

BEST COMEDY SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Mayim Bialik, “The Big Bang Theory”
Julie Bowen, “Modern Family”
Kathryn Joosten, “Desperate Housewives”
Sofia Vergara, “Modern Family”
Merritt Wever, “Nurse Jackie”
Kristin Wiig, “Saturday Night Live”

Dream and Settle: Kirstin Wiig  Expect: Julie Bowen

I don’t really watch SNL, but I think Wiig deserves an award.  But we all know Modern Family will grab another award.

TV MOVIE/MINISERIES

BEST TV MOVIE/MINISERIES

“American Horror Story”
“Game Change”
“Hatfields & McCoys”
“Hemingway & Gellhorn”
“Luther”
“Sherlock: Scandal in Belgravia”

Dream: Sherlock  Settle and Expect: Game Change

Sherlock is one of the best shows on TV.  I’m not sure why it’s in the Movie/Miniseries category, but I’ll always pick it.  Game Change comes second for being fantastic while giving some great performances.  I think Game Change will win though.  By the way, if American Horror Story wins, let’s just say I’m going to be really upset.

VARIETY

BEST VARIETY SERIES

“The Colbert Report”
“The Daily Show”
“Jimmy Kimmel Live”
“Late Night With Jimmy Fallon”
“Real Time with Bill Maher”
“Saturday Night Live”

Dream: The Daily Show  Settle: The Colbert Report  Expect: The Daily Show

With the exception of Real Time with Bill Maher (does anyone actually watch that?) a fine selection of nominees.  The Daily Show always makes me laugh, so I think it should win, though part of me would love to see The Colbert Report shine.

  1. I’m glad we agree on our love for BB. Can’t comment on anything other than the dramas, being in the UK and all.

    • Breaking Bad is awesome. I hope it wins!
