The 5 Best Animated TV Shows of All Time

What would this list be without The Simpsons?

I’ve said I’d make this list a long time ago.  I then forgot about it, and then said I’d do it again.  So now I’ve finally made a top 5 list of the best animated TV shows ever.  This is my personal opinion, so you can comment on a show you think that’s missing from the list.  And, unfortunately, they’re more than 5 great animated TV shows, and honorable mentions go to FuturamaTom and Jerry, and The Critic.

So here are my choices.

5. The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show

This came out way back in the early 60s before I was even born but I’ve always had a passion for the show.  It was a funny look at the Cold War, and what kid doesn’t love a talking moose and squirrel?  A great TV series, but just do yourself a favor and don’t watch the recent movie adaption.

4. King of the Hill

It was surprising to see that Mike Judge, the man who made Beavis and Butt-Head, could make one of the most heartfelt TV series of all time.  King of the Hill is such an underrated show that was a story between a father and son.  It never became as popular as The Simpsons, but Mike Judge’s and Gregg Daniels’ creation has a place in all of our hearts.

3. Beavis and Butt-Head

Beavis and Butt-Head is a very low-brow show, but also high-brow in a way.  Though the film revolved around the antics and stupidity of the two MTV obsessed teens, creator Mike Judge used them to satirize the MTV kid image.  With hilarious commentary on music videos, Beavis and Butt-Head is one of the best animated shows of all time.

2. South Park

Matt Stone and Trey Parker’s show took on every target it could, from Scientology to Jennifer Lopez through the mouths of some foul mouthed kids from the small Colorado town of South Park.  The series may not have great animation, but has remained culturally relevant throughout the years.  It’s uproariously funny, and certainly is one of the greatest satires of all time.

1. The Simpsons

The Simpsons isn’t just my favorite animated TV show, but my favorite TV show of all time.  Before, TV families were happy and cheerful.  The Simpsons took the TV image, and made it the opposite.  The TV clown is an alcoholic, the mayor is corrupt, and the center family is dysfunctional.  The writers made us care for the family, and even though the show is 13 years past its prime, it will always be my favorite.

  1. Great list, it’s hard to choose one but if I had to it would be Simpsons, as I grew up watching it.

    • Thanks. As far as I can remember, The Simpsons has been my favorite TV show. I just love the pop culture references to films like Citizen Kane and 2001 and how it respected its characters (at least before season 10). I’m glad you share the same opinion!

  2. While they will never get back to their former glory, there really isn’t another show that can come close to it. If nothing else, I doubt any other show will have that kind run. Nice to see King of the Hill getting some love, it’s not an outrageously funny show, the humor is more subtle, but it does pretty well for itself.

    • It’s sad to see The Simpsons these days as it is now a former shell of its greater self. Still, it will always be my favorite. I’m glad to see you’re a fan of King of the Hill as well. It’s not really a laugh out loud show like Judge’s other show Beavis and Butt-Head, but it’s one of the most heartfelt. King of the Hill might rank with The Wire, Arrested Development, and Freaks and Geeks as the most underrated TV shows of all time.
