The Return of The Ricky Gervais Show

Stephen Merchant and Ricky Gervais watch as Karl Pilkington is likely to say something stupid.

Life’s Too Short ended its first season recently, and what a good run it was.  Sure, it was pretty similar to Extras, but I cannot enough Ricky Gervais on TV.

So HBO premiered The Ricky Gervais Show, an animated series made up of podcasts done by Gervais, co-writer and collaborator Stephen Merchant, and Karl Pilkington.  But the humor from the show doesn’t really come from Gervais or Merhant.  It’s from Karl, a blissfully ignorant man who really doesn’t know anything what he’s talking about.  In an interview on The Daily Show, Gervais told Jon Stewart that Karl actually believed Anne Frank and her family hid so they didn’t have to pay the rent (seriously, I’m not kidding).

Gervais and Merchant to mock and take advantage of Pilkington and laugh at his ignorance.  But the show never grows too extraordinarily mean (well, it could be meaner, okay, this isn’t a great point).

But Gervais tends to dip his humor into depths of cringe-ability.  Some people don’t like it (look at all the people who complained about the Golden Globes), but I and other fans do.  So I’ll be watching Karl Pilkington saying something completely ridiculous and absurd every Friday.
