The Blues Brothers are back!

John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd as the legendary musical duo

A long time ago (late 70s and early 80s), a comedy routine was turned into a cultural phenomenon.  John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd made two characters Jake and Elwood Blues, who first played at Saturday Night Live, and eventually made a landmark in music-comedy.  And in 1980, a movie was made based off the duo, perhaps the only SNL-based film that actually worked and managed to live up to the sketches.

Since then, there hasn’t been much of the Blues Brothers. After John Belushi died, Blues Brothers 2000 was made and disappointed most fans.  So this morning, I was surprised to hear that Panacea Entertainment announced plans to revive the brothers.

Dan Aykroyd, Judy Belushi (John’s widow), and Eric Gardner (founder and chairman of Panacea) announced that there will be a Blues Brothers TV series, along with the possibility for a musical, a radio station, and much more.

I’m a huge fan of the Blues Brothers, but I’m a little worried about the casting (I’m sure Aykroyd can’t reprise his role).  The Blues Brothers is a cultural icon, and I don’t know what today’s generation reacts to it (just don’t do what so many do and make it set in today).  But what sounds interesting is the possibility of a musical.  The Blues Brothers is set up to be a musical, so it would be easy to set up for the stage.

Dan Aykroyd said “Thirty years after Jake passed through the veil, the Blues Brothers are being introduced to not one but two entirely new generations of music lovers.  Judy and I welcome the experienced guiding hand of Eric Gardner, who envisions ways of expanding our reach and impact which we never even thought of.”

Gardner said, “The Blues Brothers is one of the world’s most iconic brands. Like Coca-Cola and Nike, it speaks volumes that Jake and Elwood are instantaneously recognizable simply from a few illustrative brushstrokes: black fedoras, sunglasses and skinny ties. I look forward to working with Danny and Judy to expand their brand across multiple platforms around the globe.”
