ABC Picks Jimmy Kimmel to Host Emmys

This is the first time Kimmel has hosted the Emmys, though he has appeared before.

ABC has picked Jimmy Kimmel, host of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, to emcee the 64th Annual Primetime Emmys.  This decision seems similar to 2010, when NBC picked other late-night comedian Jimmy Fallon to host the Emmys.

I’ve never seen too much of Kimmel (in late-night comedy, I only have enough time to watch The Daily Show and The Colbert Report), but I feel he’s a good enough comedian to handle the awards.  This isn’t his first hosting gig either; he’s done the ESPys, the American Music Awards, and his annual After-Oscar Special, plus he’ll be at the upcoming White House Correspondent’s Dinner.

The real question is what quality of writing the Emmys will give him.  Last year, Jane Lynch hosted, and gave a performance that reminded me of Anne Hathaway from the Oscars: too sappy and cheering for Hollywood.

However, late-night comedians do have a good track record at the Emmys.  Look at Johnny Carson, Conan O’Brien, and Jimmy Fallon.  Plus, this can’t be worse than last time ABC had the Emmys (it was the year where they had all the reality hosts emcee the awards).

In response, Kimmel said, “”I hope to be able to do for the Emmys this year what Eddie Murphy did for the Oscars,” referring to Murphy’s pull from the Oscars after Brett Ratner resigned as producer.  The Emmys will be on September 23rd on ABC.
