Colbert for President 2012!

Well, Stephen Colbert transferred his super PAC to Jon Stewart on last night’s Colbert Report.  Because yesterday, Stephen announced he was running for the Republican presidential primary in South Carolina.

From the “Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear”

Owning a super PAC while running for president is illegal, so after Stephen Colbert consulted on-air with his Trevor Potter (who was John McCain’s campaign manager in 2008), Colbert couldn’t have the super PAC and run for president at the same time.  But no problem!  Jon Stewart agreed to take Colbert’ super PAC.  Both comedians signed two documents and acted the transfer.  Jon Stewart retitled the super PAC as “The Definitely Not Coordinated with Stephen Colbert Super PAC.”

On the night before, Colbert pointed out on a Public Policy Poll survey that he was ahead of John Hunstman, even though he run until yesterday.  So I guess that might have been the inspiration to run again.

Now before you say “didn’t Colbert do that for the 2008 Election?” let me say that Colbert last time ran for the Democratic Party (the Republican Party had a higher fee to run).  Colbert’s fake personality, which is a parody of conservative newscasters Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity, is at his funniest when he’s doing something face to face.  Remember in 2006 when he roasted George Bush at his own White House Correspondent’s dinner?

Anyway, I’m excited to see how Colbert will do.  I doubt Republicans like Stephen Colbert, who constantly lampoons and parodies them, but it’s going to be fun to see where this election turns.
