30 Rock returns soon… My thoughts

30 Rock is returning soon.  It’ll be back on January 11th, at 8:00, which is (or maybe was) Community‘s spot.  But I’m not happy about this.

Don’t get me wrong, I like 30 Rock, or at least its first three seasons.  The problem is the show tries to cram tons of jokes in a single episode.  At its best, 30 Rock is a strong piece of comedy.  But at its worse, which the last two seasons and the end of season 2 looked like, it pretty much becomes a live action version of Family Guy.

Sometimes 30 Rock still has brilliant moments, such as the 100th episode that came out earlier this year.  But the show doesn’t have very well developed characters, other than Jack Donaghy.  Yes, Tina Fey is funny, but Liz Lemon has stayed pretty much stayed the same for the past five seasons, and hasn’t really changed from a middle-aged comedy writer being taunted by her fellow writers and actors.  And even though Tracy and Kenneth make me laugh, well, you don’t really feel too strongly about them.

Yes, many critics I like, including Tim Goodman and Ken Tucker, still enjoy 30 Rock.  And I don’t think 30 Rock is as random as Family Guy.  But it hasn’t seemed funny for a long time.  And I’m angry that it’s taking Community‘s slot and may kick it off air, when Community is a far stronger and better written show.  30 Rock can reboot itself by focusing on its characters more than its jokes.

  1. How are the ratings for the show? Are they declining?

    • They’re around 3 or 4 million, down from the 5 million the show had from seasons 1 to 3.
