Greatest Christmas TV Episode Ever: Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire

Note: These are Christmas TV episodes, not specials, so A Charlie Brown Christmas and many others aren’t eligible.

There’s a string of great TV Christmas Episodes.  You can name one from Cheers, South Park, The Office, Arrested Development, Frasier, and the list goes on and on.  But my favorite has to go to The Simpsons episode “Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire”.

I’ve mentioned before how The Simpsons is my favorite TV show.  Even though it’s not as great now as it was back in the 90s, The SImpsons still is number one to me.  “Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire” was the first episode aired of the series, and it remains a holiday classic.

The story starts out with things looking gloomy for Christmas, with Lisa asking for a pony and Bart asking for a tattoo.  Things get even worse as Homer discovers Mr. Burns won’t be giving out a Christmas bonus this year, and Marge spends all the Holiday money to get rid of a tattoo Bart got.

To try to get back the holiday money, Homer becomes a mall Santa, but discovers the pay still is too low.  But Homer’s desperate, so he and Bart go down to the dog races to try to win some money.  They bet on a dog named Santa’s Little Helper, which they believe to be a good omen.  Unfortunately, Santa’s Little Helper comes last, and his owner abandons him.  Bart pleads for Homer to take in thee poor dog, which Homer reluctantly agrees to.  And when Homer brings back the dog home, the entire family believes Santa’s Little Helper is a Christmas present.

What I love about the episode is its warmth.  The episode’s happy ending is heartwarming for audiences, and every time I see it, I enjoy it more.  Most people say The Simpsons’s first season was good, but the show became great around the third season.  And though I feel that’s true, the first season has a lot of heart.  “Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire” has you care about the characters and make you feel deeply about them.  Most shows don’t accomplish that in their entire runs, and The Simpsons accomplishes it in its own pilot.  Now that’s special.
