AFI Best of the Year List: Some Good Ones, Some Head Scratchers

AFI’s annual awards came today, and there were surprises, both good and bad, and some one that were pretty obvious.  The AFI’s respect diversity in films, hence Bridesmaid’s nomination, which I’m fine with because of the positive response it got.

On the other hand, Clint Eastwood’s melodramatic J. Edgar, which received mixed reviews from critics, probably shouldn’t be on this list.  But good job’s with The Descendants (which is favorite film of the year thus far) and Moneyball.  But overall, the movie list is pretty good.  I haven’t seen War Horse yet, but it looks great.

As for television, they get parts right and wrong.  There are many of the same winners of last year, like The Good Wife, and some new entries.

First what’s right: kicking out Glee, the overrated mess some people call a show and putting in two critically beloved but not heavily watched shows, Parks and Recreation and Louie.  And good for mentioning Justified, Game of Thrones, and Homeland, especially since these shows need to get their dues.  And of coarse you can’t mention the year without Breaking Bad.

Some surprised me, but were good as well.  Boardwalk Empire hasn’t received as warm a response for its second season, but it’s still ranges as one of TV’s best shows.  And Curb Your Enthusiasm finally returned to the list from 2004.  Curb’s always funny, but I didn’t expect it to make the list.

However, there’s some major complaints: Community is missing again, no Friday Night Lights, and since when does Modern Family need another win?  It’s still funny, but is it really one of the top 10 shows?

The AFI Special Awards, which go to films that don’t fit AFI’s eligibility include The Artist, which I haven’t seen because it’s still in limited release, and the Harry Potter Series.  Anyway, enjoy!
