Oscar Picks For Animation: Are There Any?

It has been a bad year for animation.  Cars 2 has been Pixar’s first critical failure, and Happy Feet 2 has been receiving mixed reviews.  It’s gotten to the certain point where it looks like the mediocre Kung Fu Panda 2 is the frontrunner.

Last year, we had the terrific Toy Story 3, which Time Magazine named the best film of the year, and was number two on A. O. Scott’s list after Inside Job.  And the year before was the critically helmed Up, which was the first animated film to be nominated for best picture since Beauty and the Beast.  But what is there this year?

Well, its hard to pick the animated nominations for the Oscars, since they usually swap between 3 and 5 pictures.  If I had to pick the most likely nominees, they would be Tintin, Kung Fu Panda 2, Arthur Christmas, and Puss in Boots.

The winner seems to be Tintin.  Early European reviews have been largely positive, and with names like Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson attached, its impossible for the Oscars to ignore this.

There’s always a chance Cars 2 or Happy Feet 2 will get a nomination, but we’ll wait to see.

  1. I am looking forward to Tintin. Always love stories about boys and their dogs (Lassie, Rin Tin Tin, Where the Red Fern Grows)!
