Ricky Gervais Now Golden Globe Host!

This is the best thing I’ve heard in Hollywood for the whole year, minus Billy Crystal hosting the Oscars.  The Golden Globes have asked Ricky Gervais back.

Now this is a surprise.  After Gervais roasted the Globes for their terrible award choices (I’d like to quash this ridiculous rumor going around that the only reason The Tourist was nominated was so the HFPA could hang out with Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie. That is rubbish. That is not the only reason. They also accepted bribes.) it seems strange that the Globes would take such a risk.  But Gervais provided the best hosting performance in years for an awards show, and the ratings had gone up, convincing NBC to try to get him back.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) had a tough vote on it, and according to their website, they state “While many welcome Gervais’s return, not everyone is happy with the decision because last year his blunt one-liners targeting big-name celebrities caused anger and resentment in some quarters.”

Many of the old time HFPA members were against Gervais coming back, including Judy Solomon, who said, “My worry was that he was insulting, and when I invite someone to my house, they don’t insult me. But this is show business. I guess I’m old-fashioned.”

But the HFPA knows not to make the same mistake the Oscars did last year by trying to cheer Hollywood.  Edgy humor is what gets the young viewers advertisers want.  Ricky Gervais tweeted, ““Just told [Oscar host] Billy Crystal he’d better not use any of my holocaust or pedophile material at The Oscars. He agreed (true).”
