HBO picks up Sorkin’s Cable-News TV Show

Good news for Sorkin fans, HBO has picked up Aaron Sorkin’s untitled drama about cable news.  Sorkin, who recently won an Oscar for screenwriting The Social Network and created the TV series The West WIng and SportsNite.

Sorkin is one of the most brilliant TV writers on TV, and I believe he is using the idea that Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert used in the “Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear” for his show.  One problem I’ve heard with Sorkin’s work, however, is that his characters can sometimes be just mouthpieces.

Hopefully, the series will become the next West Wing, but who knows what to expect.  HBO’s announcement below.

The series centers on a cable news anchor (Jeff Daniels), his new executive producer (Emily Mortimer), his newsroom staff (Alison Pill, John Gallagher, Jr., Olivia Munn, Dev Patel, Thomas Sadoski) and their boss (Sam Waterston). Together they set out on a patriotic and quixotic mission to do the news well in the face of corporate and commercial obstacles and their own personal entanglements.
