Review: Rise of the Planet of the Apes a Riveting Ride

Planet of the Apes started as a B-movie series back in the 60s, with actors wearing ape suits and Charlton Heston shouting out corny lines.  In 2001, 20th Century Fox tried to reboot the series, but failed.

Now, the Planet of the Apes series has just gotten interesting.

Unlike the other Ape films, Rise is one that offers depth in character and personality.

The movie starts with Shaun (played by James Franco, who comes back from the dead from the Oscars), a rising scientist who is creating drugs that could prevent Alzheimer’s disease.  Shaun is doing this because his father, Charles (John Ligthow) has Alzheimer’s, and he is determined to do anything to help his father.

Shaun’s drug is tested on chimps, whose I. Q.s increase drastically.  However, Shaun’s project is called off when a chimp goes wild, when later Shaun finds out she was protecting her son.

Shaun adopts the baby chimp, knowing his bosses would put it down if he didn’t, and brings it home.  The chimp is named Caesar, and when he grows up, he inherits all the genes his mother got from the drug.

Amazed by Caesar, Shaun tries the drug on his father, which cures his disease.  Shaun even gets a girlfriend who is an animal doctor.

Everything is going fine, until Caesar is taken into a primate control center after attacking a neighbor, but Caesar was actually defending Charles, who started to gain Alzheimer’s again.

Andy Serkais, who played Gollum in Lord of the Rings, gives the best performance in the film as Caesar.  If there an Oscar for motion capture actors, it would definitely go to him.

The film shows how Caesar progresses, from a child to an adolescent teen, to a grown up.  This transition is the strongest part of the film.

Too bad most action films can’t be good as Rise of the Planet of the Apes, otherwise all Hollywood films would be beloved by critics.

  1. This was a great review. I have recently watched this movie and i believe that Caesar should definitelpy get the Oscar. Rise of the Planet of the Apes is probably the best film I have seen all year.
