Today is a sad day: Breaking Bad airs its final episode tonight. I read that Vince Gilligan and co. went through over forty possible endings before writing the last script and I have great faith in the show to deliver. In years from now, I predict Breaking Bad would be considered one of the greatest and most revolutionary shows of all time (even though it’s already deemed as a classic now).
So this inspired this week’s question: what’s the next great TV drama now that there’s no more Breaking Bad? I’ve been talking this over with a friend and I’m not sure if there’s one to immediately pick up the reigns. Mad Men would be my first alternative, but it only has two years until its own conclusion, and while it has maintained its great quality, it’s hard to deny the most recent season felt a bit lackluster. And while there are plenty of other great dramas on TV, I’m not sure anything can take Breaking Bad‘s place. But who knows? Back in 2007 and 2008, when The Sopranos and The Wire concluded their runs, people had the same discussion.
But what do you think?
